Abstract

  • In real terms, wages for workers in Indonesia's industrial and hotel sectors have seen slight increases over the past five years. The hotel sector only saw an increase of 8.5%, while the mining sector experienced a significant decrease of 20.5%, from IDR 607,400 to IDR 483,200.
  • A relatively high number of industrial companies still paid nominal wages below the Provincial Minimum Wage (UMP). In the first quarter of 2001, of the 775 sampled companies, about 26% (202 companies) paid wages below the UMP. In the second and third quarters of 2001, this proportion was 23% (149 out of 660 companies) and 22% (53 out of 240 companies), respectively.
  • Regarding the wages received by workers, in the first quarter of 2001, around 16% of workers were still receiving wages below the UMP. In the second and third quarters of 2001, the proportions were 14% and 13%, respectively.
