Abstract

The economy of East Kalimantan based on Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) at current prices in the fourth quarter of 2011 was recorded at Rp. 103.8 trillion (including oil and gas) or Rp. 67.2 trillion (excluding oil and gas). Meanwhile, the GRDP at constant 2000 prices reached Rp. 29.5 trillion (including oil and gas) and Rp. 19.9 trillion (excluding oil and gas).
Economic growth in East Kalimantan in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared to the third quarter of 2011 (q-to-q) reached 1.83 percent, slower than the previous quarter which was 1.91 percent. Meanwhile, growth in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared to the same quarter of the previous year (y-on-y) was 5.16 percent, higher than the fourth quarter of 2010 which grew by 2.81 percent.
When viewed by economic sector, on a q-to-q basis almost all economic sectors experienced an increase compared to the previous quarter, except for the agriculture sector and the manufacturing sector which were corrected, by negative 0.57 percent and negative 2.00 percent respectively. The development of the mining sector as the leading sector of East Kalimantan's economy in this quarter grew positively by 3.44 percent, driven by an increase in coal mining production.
From the expenditure side, the export and import components that contributed the most grew positively in the fourth quarter of 2011, by 2.32 percent and 2.80 percent respectively. And when calculated, the trade balance in East Kalimantan in the fourth quarter of 2011 experienced a surplus of Rp. 70.9 trillion. The development of investment in East Kalimantan until the end of 2011 still showed a positive trend, as indicated by the growth of the PMTB component which increased by 2.64 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011. Specifically, government consumption expenditure in the fourth quarter of 2011 increased by 1.20 percent, mainly influenced by the increase in budget realization and government spending as well as the better absorption of government budget utilization.
