Abstract

The number of poor people (population below the poverty line) in Kalimantan Timur in March 2007 was 324.8 thousand (11.04 percent). Compared to the poor population in July 2005 which amounted to 299.1 thousand (10.57 percent), meaning the number of poor people increased by 25.7 thousand.
During the July 2005-March 2007 period, the poor population in rural areas decreased by 4.3 thousand people, while in urban areas it increased by 30.1 thousand people.
In March 2007, the majority of the poor were in rural areas at 58.13 percent.
The role of food commodities towards the Poverty Line is far greater than the role of non-food commodities (housing, clothing, education, and health). In March 2007, the contribution of food commodities to the poverty line was 70.83 percent.
