Abstract

The number of poor people (population below the poverty line) in Kalimantan Timur in March 2009 was 239.22 thousand (7.73 percent). Compared to the poor population in March 2008 which amounted to 286.44 thousand (9.51 percent), meaning the number of poor people decreased by 47.22 thousand.
During the period March 2008 - March 2009, the poor population in rural areas decreased by 13.92 thousand people, and in urban areas decreased by 33.29 thousand people.
In March 2009, the majority of the poor population were in rural areas at 67.79 percent.
The role of food commodities towards the Poverty Line is far greater than the role of non-food commodities (housing, clothing, education, and health). In March 2008, the contribution of food commodities to the poverty line was 71.42 percent.
In the period March 2008-March 2009, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) showed a declining trend and the Poverty Severity Index (P2) tended to increase. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tends to get closer to the poverty line and the inequality of expenditure of the poor increases slightly.
