Abstract

The number of poor people (population below the poverty line) in Kalimantan Timur in March 2008 was 286.4 thousand (9.51 percent). Compared to the poor population in March 2007 which amounted to 324.8 thousand (11.04 percent), meaning the number of poor people decreased by 38.4 thousand.

During the period March 2007-March 2008, the poor population in rural areas decreased by 12.6 thousand people, and in urban areas decreased by 25.7 thousand people.

In March 2008, the majority of the poor population were in rural areas at 61.49 percent.

The role of food commodities towards the Poverty Line is far greater than the role of non-food commodities (housing, clothing, education, and health). In March 2008, the contribution of food commodities to the poverty line was 71.22 percent.
